memorials as spaces for free thought
Görlitz-Zgorzelec. There are a number of places in Görlitz and Zgorzelec, commemorating the victims of the Nazi dictatorship and during the Second World War crimes. These include the synagogue of the extinct Jewish community of Görlitz and the Stalag VIIIa, a former prisoner of war camp.

In the decades after 1945 it has often done in Görlitz hard to find the correct use of these sites.
today come in many people ritualized forms of historical memory now with skepticism. Memorials may be places of reflection, space for free thinking, places of debate and understanding. From memory, new actions can grow.
The project "thinking ahead" of the Heinrich Boell Foundation and the Association Görlitz synagogue eV do want to contribute an event, the building of the former synagogue with regard to religious needs of Jews in Görlitz, a place of encounter and to make the exchange on Jewish history, religion and culture, but also to the political culture of understanding, tolerance and moral courage.
